Mighty Mites football teams ruin Laurel homecoming
The Bowie Boys and Girls Club Mighty Mites No. 1 was incredible even under slippery, rainy and muddy conditions. The team, coached by Charles Dudley, Lawrence Speed, Randy Saunders, Corey Ball and Kwasi Irving, seemed to have miniprofessional players on the field during their 7-0 win over Laurel.
The Mites were guests at Laurel Sunday for their homecoming game which turned out to be no glorious day for them. BBGC won on Laurel turf by way of an amazing defense.
Offensive players Ryan Saunders, Sean Black, Jared Byrd, Zach Dudley, Kent Edwards, Travis Hopkins, Christian Jones, C.J. Lowe, Gabe Miles, Alonzo Parke, Kevin Smith, Bradley Speed, Cameron Stuart, Jordan Best and Ben Taylor were unstoppable.
The Mites defense did not allow more than five yards during any Laurel possession. Bowie also had a couple of sacks led by Taylor and Dudley. Even though the conditions were a mess, quarterback play from Justin Ball and D. Gaskins made it look simple on the field.
Twins Damon and Deion Green each had an unbelievable game, strongly containing the outside on defense, making it impossible for Laurel to score. Not to mention that Deion had an interception in the second half while Damon had the game-winning tackle to keep Laurel scoreless.
The win would not have been possible without running backs Sieh Bangura, Abiolia Dosumnu and Brandon Bell. The three boys looked like they were pros despite the muddy conditions, but it was huge holes that the offensive line made for the running backs to slide on through that helped make the difference. Brandon Bell ran for a 30-yard touchdown to give Bowie the win.
The Mighty Mites No. 2 team faced a determined Laurel Wildcats No. 2 team Saturday at Duckett Field, spoiling Laurel's homecoming festivities with a 21-7 win. The field conditions could only be described with one word: horrible. On a severely muddy field, the Bulldogs put in their work as Justus McDougal led off the scoring with a punishing 40-yard touchdown scamper around the left end. Several plays later, Tyree Shields showed his toughness as he ran around the Laurel defense for the second score of the day. Putting the icing on the homecoming cake, McDougal showed his grit by running through and around virtually the entire Wildcats squad.
The Bulldogs continue to be led by the physical blocking of Amir Majors, Alonzo Banks and Mason Moses. Bowie had several first-year players step up with multiple tackle performances. Amir Ellis shored up the middle and Kye Holmes locked down the corner while dropping the Wildcats for key losses all day. The strength and hard work of the offensive line showed as the Bulldogs dominated the line of scrimmage led by Jerome Lee, Zyon Foote, Kolby Mitchell, Miles Blanc, Hayden Fisher and Austin Eberlein.
The Bulldogs defense flexed its muscle behind strong play from defensive linemen Brendan Johnson, Brandon Minor, Nathan Trask, Carrington Hagens, Zachery Thompson, Jordan Edmonds, Evan Bentley and Ian Partman, holding the Lions to just seven points.
Outstanding tackling by Darran Edmonds stopped the Wildcats from scoring a second touchdown on the 2-yard line. Excellent defensive back play by Walter Byrd and Brandon Seeley helped to solidify a strong showing by these first-year players. The Mighty Mites No. 2 team showed toughness and patience and look forward to continuing their winning ways Saturday at Whitemarsh Field.
