Football

Lenell King highlighted the Shaw offense with 160 receiving yards, while the quarterback duo of Marcus Brooks and Travis Robinson combined to complete 18 of 33 passes for 299 yards in leading Shaw University to a convincing 41-10 victory over Bowie State University.

Shaw (3-2/2-0 CIAA) scored first thanks to a bad center snap which sailed over the head of Bowie State punter Michael Gagne, who kicked the ball out of the back of the end zone, resulting in a safety. King burned the Bowie State secondary for an 82-yard touchdown reception from Robinson, giving Shaw a 9-0 advantage with 4:29 left in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs put their first six points on the board at the 13:18 mark of the second quarter. Green hauled in a 15-yard pass from Scott and Gagne added the extra point, cutting the Bulldogs' deficit to 9-7. King then scored his second touchdown of the afternoon, this time for 52 yards, giving the Bears a little breathing room at 16-7 with 11:27 remaining in the first half. Gagne converted a 20-yard field goal at the 4:10 mark, trimming the Shaw lead to 16-10.

Caleb Reid booted a 22-yard field goal as time expired in the first half, sending Shaw into the locker room leading 19-10. Shaw amassed 204 total yards in the first half, compared to only 65 yards for Bowie State.

Just like Shaw's first points of the game, the Bears scored two points by way of a safety when Bowie State's Tariq Jones was tackled in the end zone, increasing the Bears lead to 21-10. Jason Royal put his name in the official record, catching a 12-yard pass, pushing the Shaw lead to 28-10.

Lincoln Shepherd nailed a 34-yard field goal just as the fourth quarter began, giving the Bears a very comfortable 31-10 stronghold over the Bulldogs. Shepherd kicked a 23-yard field goal with 9:13 left to play, extending Shaw's lead to 34-10. Frederick Holliday put the final nail in the coffin with 5:22 left in the game, scampering in from 16 yards, making the score 41-10. The defending CIAA champions rolled up 462 yards in total offense and held Bowie State to a season-low 155 total yards.

Defensively, Bowie State's Alvin Cox recorded a game-high 14 tackles for the Bulldogs.

Bowie State (2-2/1-1 CIAA) will finally get to play at home for the first time this season when the Bulldogs host the Lions of Lincoln (Pa.) University at 1 p.m. Saturday in the fifth annual Prince George's Classic.
