What began in promising fashion for the Bowie High boys basketball team Friday against visiting Dr. Henry Wise soon devolved into one of the school’s most lopsided setbacks in recent memory. The contest was a complete contrast to the previous meeting between the two squads when the Bulldogs won by two points in Upper Marlboro in January. An equally lopsided loss to Suitland further buried the Bulldogs in the 4A South.

  • Bowie drops another to Wise

Could the script have been written any better?

Two county coaching veterans battle it out season after season, with one team generally garnering most of the accolades. Bowie girls basketball coach Michael Hines and Dr. Henry Wise coach Walter Clark, a mainstay in Prince George’s County since the 1970s, took their respective teams into battle Friday, but it was the Lady Pumas escaping with a 61-59 win over the Lady Bulldogs.

  • Bowie High swim teams drop final dual meet to Roosevelt

There may have been considerably less drama in Saturday’s county dual meet between longtime rivals Bowie and Eleanor Roosevelt high schools than what transpired in Super Bowl XLVI the next evening, but the outcome proved far more beneficial to the Bulldogs in terms of their long-term goals than what the final point totals may have indicated.

The Bowie High boys and girls indoor track teams each had an outstanding track meet at the Virginia Tech High School Invitational Track and Field Meet held at the Blacksburg campus. Over 100 teams from the Washington, D.C., area attended the meet, which was a non-scoring competition though all results were entered online for viewing by college track coaches.

  • Robinson, Lewis lack fear of commitment

The first day of February is often a memorable occasion for high school seniors. This year was no different as a pair of Bowie High football veterans signed their national college letters of intent.

  • Robinson leads Bulldogs in slim win over Bladensburg

As a not-so-famous sports writer once wrote, whew!

Jalen Robinson netted 16 points and hauled in 12 rebounds, and the Bowie High basketball team edged out Bladensburg, 51-49.

  • Bowie poms dominate Charm City

Some things are simply meant to be. And when what seems to be fateful is occurring, there is no way to stop it.

Just get out of the way.

  • Heavy-hearted Lady Bulldog

There are too few people that the average person will meet in their lifetime, who will impress them with a work ethic and tenacity of someone like Bowie High junior Sabriena Shubert. Two weeks ago, her sister Andrea died from complications of a seizure. Since then, the road has been tough to hoe for the entire Shubert family. But Shubert elected to remain in school and with her basketball teammates, and her strength has not gone unnoticed by the Bowie players and coaches.

  • BHS girls run ERHS streak to 6 games

    Whew!

Bowie and Eleanor Roosevelt high schools aren’t dominating the 4A South basketball season like in seasons past, but both teams are sticking around and occupy second (tie) and third (tie) place, respectively, following their hot-as-usual showdown Friday at Bowie.

Neither team seemingly wanted to take control of the game, but the Lady Bulldogs (9-3, 8-2 4A South) finally did own their home court en route to a 50-44 win. It was Bowie’s sixth consecutive victory over Roosevelt.
