| Bowie stages showcase local talent for all By DAVID EMANUEL, Staff Writer Bowie is a town of talent, and nowhere is that made more clear than on the city's many theatrical stages. With its new Bowie Center for the Performing Arts, thanks to the tireless efforts of the Bowie Regional Arts Vision Association, and classic showcases in the city like the Bowie Playhouse at Whitemarsh Park, there is never a shortage of showstoppers right here in the city. Several of Bowie High School's hit musical productions, like its recent student-run celebration, "Songs for a New World," found new, exciting life in the auditorium rather than the small stage of the high school cafeteria. The Bowie Playhouse, located just off Route 3 at Whitemarsh Park, is home to an amazing assortment of plays and musicals. Year round, there's always an outstanding performance going on by one of two award-winning production teams, Bowie Community Theater and 2nd Star Productions. There are usually three productions per company each year. The theater is also home to concerts, dance recitals and is occasionally used as a meeting place for several organizations. The playhouse is managed by the city, and is handicapped-accessible. There are three major community centers in the city, in addition to the playhouse and other arts venues. These include Bowie, South Bowie and Huntington community centers, with plenty of activities for the young and teenage set, including Choices and Challenges, an ever-growing, popular program that meets Monday afternoons after school. Speakers from area entertainment venues as well as the business and political field visit, offering a variety of activities for teenagers. Allen Pond Park, located off Route 197 and just south of Route 50, is also a site of year-round entertainment events. They include the popular Bowiefest in June, Fourth of July fireworks and Bowie Arts Expo in October. Also at the park, and at many local places of worship, music groups such as the Knights of Harmony and the Chesapeake Chorale perform seasonal concerts. For a historic and artistic look at the city, check out the four museums located within just a few miles of each other. From the museums to the auditorium, to the playhouse to the parks, music and community centers, something is sure to strike a chord in everyone in Bowie.
