City committees enhance Bowie life

City committees are advisory bodies to the City Council on various issues. Committee members are appointed to two-year terms by the council. 

The Administrative Review Board reviews and decides appeals after the issuance of a municipal infraction. This committee also serves as the board of appeals, which considers and decides on variance requests on fences, building and parking.

The Beautification and Preservation Committee sets goals and objectives for the beautification of the city and preservation of the city trees and shrubs. It makes recommendations to the council regarding the aesthetics of city entrance routes, small public-owned areas, and provides a communications link between residents, the council, and business leaders regarding concerns for the beautification of Bowie.

The Board of Elections is in charge of registration of voters, nominations and all city elections. 

The Board of Personnel Appeals was established to conduct a hearing, at the request of a city employee, when that employee feels he/she has received an unjust personnel action.

The Bowie Advisory Planning Board advises the council on immediate and long-range problems in the areas of residential, commercial and industrial land usage and development; annexation park and recreational land development; zoning changes, building and housing codes and land use controls; transportation; public services and facilities; urban renewal; capital improvement planning and other matters referred by the council.

The Bowie Arts Committee provides advice concerning immediate and long-range cultural programs and policies and sponsors increased involvement in the performing, visual and literary arts within the community.

The Bowie Education Committee studies and provides public forums or developments in education within the public schools attended by residents of the city, to provide recognition of student achievement, and teach excellence and advise the council on educational matters.
The committee oversees all public and private donations for high school students and develops efforts to improve the educational advantages for every resident high school student.

The Bowie Ethics Commission is responsible for hearing and deciding any complaint filed regarding an alleged violation of the Ethics Ordinance and the review and maintenance of financial disclosure reports filed annually by council members, specified committee members and specified city employees.

The Bowie Heritage Committee engages in activities relating to the heritage of Bowie and the surrounding area, including conservation, preservation and beautification of the city and properties that are a part of the city’s heritage.

The Cable Rate Regulation Commission provides a channel of communications between residents and the City Council regarding cable rate regulation issues and makes determinations as appropriate regarding basic cable television service rates.

The Civic Affairs Committee notifies and advises the council on civic and cultural matters in the city and plans community events, like Bowiefest and the Fourth of July festivities, that enhance the quality of life.

The Community Outreach Committee promotes community welfare matters relating to the needs and resources of the community.

The Community Recreation Committee works for continued coordination and improvement of the recreational facilities in the city of Bowie.

The Diversity Committee is the city’s newest committee and it advises the City Council on how to work toward the long-term diversity goals of the city of Bowie government.

The Economic Development Committee advises the City Council on all issues of economic and community development.

The Financial Advisory Committee provides advice regarding accounting practices and principles, budgeting, grant administration and financial reporting.

The Information Technology Committee serves as a forum for citizen input, to assure nondiscrimination in public use, to monitor legislative and technological trends and to advise the council.

The Public Safety Committee serves as a forum for citizen input, to assure nondiscrimination in public use, to monitor legislative and technological trends and to advise the council.
