    Stein responds

My sons graduated Bowie High School about 25 years ago. All I know about the present Prince George’s County School system is what I read in the newspaper. That our students are not doing well in achievement tests is why I wrote that last letter to the Blade-News. Amy Ayers made several comments on it. One significant one follows:

    Meteorologist speaks

As a meteorologist, I take a lot of criticism when forecasts aren’t "exact."

Well, weather isn’t an exact science as there are a lot of variables that come into play in the atmosphere.

    High-priced concern

There’s an old saying that "everyone is entitled to their own opinion but not to their own facts." Yet, the Aug. 4 editorial, "A high-priced cliffhanger," invents its own facts as well. It wrongly stated, "the whole debate might have been avoided if President Barack Obama took seriously the recommendations of his own deficit-reduction commission, rather than sloughing them off." That is Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News version.

    A simple solution

After reading Norman Hendrickson’s letter concerning the installation of speed camera in school zones in Bowie I can’t understand his reasoning in dealing with the cameras.

It doesn’t matter if the speed cameras are on or off, the speed limit is still the same. Why would he begin accelerating after he passed the school zone? I don’t recall ever seeing a sign that said the speed limit was whatever during school hours, and something else at other times.

    Offended at letter

I take great offense to Richard Stein’s letter in the July 14 edition. As a parent of five children enrolled in the Prince George’s County school system, I feel that I am more experienced in how the school system works for parents than he does from his experience as a "guest teacher" for his employment. He expressed his opinion, here’s mine:

    Speed cameras

If you are like me, you have gotten a fair number of speed camera tickets from the city of Bowie. You are normally a prudent driver, you know where the speed cameras are and you try to slow down before rolling in front of one. But every now and then your attention is diverted and, flash! The camera’s gotten you. Two weeks later, another $40 citation comes in the mail.

    Enough, McArdle!

Sorry Mr. McArdle, I can’t agree with your recent letter where you try to extol the merits of prior Bowie mayors, while your true agenda was to again criticize our present mayor. I know you like to use every method possible to ignore the facts that Fred Robinson is one of the best, most effective mayors our city has ever had. Having lived in Bowie through all of them it’s easy for me to compare them.

    Excellent parade!

Thank you to the city of Bowie for a great Memorial Day Parade. This was the first time we participated in the parade, and we were very impressed with the staff who organizes it, and makes sure everyone knows where and when to go on the actual day itself. My sister queens that were with me both commented on how nice everyone is in Bowie.

    Thanks, Mr. Aiello!

May 11, Blade-News staff writer Joe Aiello once again demonstrated his outstanding community pride and his dedication to our area’s first responders with his article on Police Memorial Week. I hope others took the time to read his story on this occasion to remember and honor the more than 20,000 law enforcement officers who gave the ultimate sacrifice and whose names are on the Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C.
