Information night

Bowie High School's SUMMIT Scholar Program will host an information night for interested eighth-graders and their families Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m. at Bowie Center for the Performing Arts. Hear about the rigorous pre-Advanced Placement program for the school's most motivated, independent learners. Meet SUMMIT instructors, coordinators and students. Learn about the application process and program expectations. For information, call 301-805-2600, ext. 380 or visit www.pgcps.org.

Study abroad

High school students are offered an opportunity to spend an academic year, three-month program or summer abroad as part of the ASSE International Student Exchange Program. Students ages 15-18 qualify on the basis of academic performance, character references and a desire to experience abroad with a host family. For information, call 800-677-2773 or visit www.asse.com.

Teacher of the Month

The Bowie Education Committee continues to offer the Teacher of the Month recognition program during the 2009-2010 School Year. Through the program, teachers of students in schools located in Bowie are recognized for their dedication to teaching and to their students, teaching excellence, and the "little things" which mean a lot to students, parents and peers. Nominations are a way to say thank you to a teacher for his or her positive efforts in working with students having difficulties, efforts that are above and beyond what one might expect of most teachers, or their positive influence on one student, a class, a grade or an entire school. Nominations may be submitted by principals, teachers, other educators, parents, students and community members.

Teachers selected are recognized by the Bowie City Council, and receive a certificate, a $100 U.S. savings bond provided by funds from program partner BB&T Bank, and a lunch with their principal provided by Main Street Caterers.

Nomination forms are available at www.cityofbowie.org or at the Department of Community Services at City Hall. For information, contact Education Committee liaison Leni Stern, 301-809-3068 or lstern@cityofbowie.org.
