| I can get fined ... for what?
Published 11/05/09
When a person prepares to get their drivers license, they need to know certain laws in order to pass the written test. Things like, stopping at a red octagon traffic sign, slowing down at a red triangle yield sign (yes it's red, not yellow) and no parking within 15 feet of a fire hydrant. There are other laws that are common knowledge for drivers like no drinking and driving, wearing your seat belt and obeying the posted speed limits. There are also a lot of laws that the average driver and even seasoned law enforcement officers are not aware of, like: failure to notify DMV of an address or name change within 30 days - fine, $50 driving a vehicle while a removable placard is hanging from the rear view mirror - fine, $70 and 1 point operating a motor vehicle without headlights while operating windshield wipers - fine, $40 operating a motor vehicle with handicapped tags if not accompanied by a disabled person - fine, $130 failure to display a front registration plate - fine, $60 failure of driver to stop for pedestrian in crosswalk not contributing to an accident - fine, $80 and 1 point Drivers aren't the only responsible people on the roadways. Pedestrians can also be fined for not following the rules of the road, such as: pedestrian diagonally crossing roadway without traffic device authorization - fine, $40 pedestrian walking along roadway where a sidewalk is provided - fine, $40 pedestrian standing in highway to solicit money or donations of any kind from motorist - fine, $60 pedestrian walking on controlled access highway - fine, $60 Traffic safety is the responsibility of drivers and pedestrians alike. Everyone needs to do their part to ensure the roadways are safe for all that use them. Copyright © 2009 The Bowie Blade-News and Capital Gazette Communications, Inc.
