Ogle bats in 2nd title in 3 years
Published 11/05/09

The Samuel Ogle baseball team won the Prince George's County Middle School Baseball Championship for the second time in the last three years after a 12-0 win over James Madison at Prince George's County Boys and Girls Sports Park. Over the three-year period, coaches Robbi Watson, Dan Voyles and Bruce Palmer have coached the Samuel Ogle Rams to an impressive 31-1-2 record. The Rams' championship victory over Madison completed a perfect season.

The first inning of the title game started off slow for the Rams, who were unable to get a hit. In the second and third innings, the Rams exploded for nine walks and six hits which led to 12 unanswered runs.

The Rams were led by the pitching of seventh-grader Nick Fox, who pitched three scoreless innings, striking out eight batters and allowing just one hit.

Offensively, Ogle was led by eighth-grade captains Gary Thomas and Jake Wersick. Thomas hit a bases loaded triple to secure the 12-0 victory for the Rams, while Wersick went 1-for-2 with a single and a walk. Wersick also scored a pair of runs for the Rams. Other Rams players with hits were Zach Quarles, Conor Craig and Kyle Spinks. Jordan Hinkle, Kenny Eller, Darren Blackmon, Quarles, Craig and Thomas scored additional runs for Ogle.

This win capped off a great season, which was attributed to the hard work and dedication of the boys on the team. The championship was a complete community effort, with fans showing up in numbers to watch the Rams play for - and win - the title.
