| Scouts seeking food for major drive

Saturday, hundreds of Boy Scouts will be canvassing your neighborhood asking for food donations. "Your community is in need. Please be generous again this year," said Roger Brow, Scout coordinator. "Scouting for Food" is the scouting community's stewardship project aimed at addressing the problem of hunger in the community, and is a food collection effort carried out by Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Venturers throughout Bowie. According to Brow, food drives are organized at the district level as needed. The Scouts will distribute tens of thousands of food drive donation bags Saturday, and will return to collect the donated food Saturday, Nov. 14, to bring to the Bowie Interfaith Food Pantry. The pantry is located at the Christian Community Presbyterian Church at 3120 Belair Drive. Hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 to 11 a.m. Collection containers are also available at City Hall and the Bowie Senior Center for food donations. For information, call 301-262-6765 or visit www.bowiefoodpantry.org. "The need for food and other assistance continues to rise and at times the food supply dwindles to a dangerously low level," said Brow. "Please consider nonperishable food or a tax-deductible monetary donation. It is greatly appreciated year-round, not just this week." According to Kim Wiemann, Bowie Food Pantry coordinator, their shelves are almost bare, and with many new people needing assistance, this year's drive has to succeed. "At the very heart of the Boy Scout Movement is the friendly good turn," said Brow. "It is so essential to the boy, the organization and to society in general. It is of great importance that we understand all that it really means as well as how to best stimulate its use and recognize its values. Bowie, won't you do your good turn?"
