Our Say: In with the incumbents
Published 10/29/09

Experience vs. change.

Proven track records vs. fresh perspectives.

Trusted platforms vs. progressive agendas.

Pondering this over, we have decided that the votes for all city seats this year should remain with the incumbents.

When all is said and done, this truly is one of the most cohesive bodies in recent memory that sits as the City Council, even with that little bit of infighting every now and then.

Let's start with those running unopposed.

James Marcos (District 1), Todd Turner (District 3) and Isaac Trouth (District 4) all definitely have the background and have proven themselves over the years with business know-how and a true community spirit. (We like what Councilman Trouth said in his campaign literature, "My motto is to be a community councilman.")

And another easy, and much-deserved victory, is Fred Robinson.

Honestly, he could be included in the previous trio of council members as running unopposed, as no one that we know of has heard anything from his challenger, Sam Graham. He was a no-show at a candidates forum (he didn't even leave any literature for people to peruse), and did not respond to questions for the special election section for this publication.

Robinson's leadership is second to none over the years. He is a mayor who works to get things done. He has compiled an amazing, successful record. Like he says in his literature, "Let's continue to build an incredible hometown that is the envy of the region."

For the at-large members, we're going with Dennis Brady and Geraldine Valentino-Smith. Just read the letters this week in their support. They certainly deserve it for all of their efforts. And we do hope their challenger, Anthony Kennedy, does run again someday. Right now, even though we applaud his youthful attitude and positivity, he still needs more political experience.

And finally, in the race for District 2, we stick with Diane Polangin. She brings a common sense, "real" approach to the council, and is quite the positive influence. Her work with a wide array of organizations and her awards are proof of her effectiveness. While her challenger, Pete Mellits, does offer much background in terms of public safety, that alone just isn't enough to go up against someone with proven experience on the council.

Again, we say, proven experience is the way to go in the election this year. And of course, we also say, get out there and vote.
