Bowie hit as county's Arc scrambles to cope amid waiting list growth

Just when the developmental disabilities community thought the state couldn't cut resources any more.

The Arc of Prince George's County is a nonprofit organization that provides services to a large number of those living with developmental disabilities in Bowie, Mitchellville and Glenn Dale. The Arc has gotten used to working with a tight budget. Even in a thriving economy, its clients' needs grew as state funding shrank.

When the state Board of Public Works decided last week to slash the budget for community service providers by 2 percent - saving the state an estimated $21.7 million - the community...
