| Chamber president welcomes newcomers to the community By ART WIDMANN![]() n behalf of all of the businesses in the greater Bowie area, I welcome you to our community. You are in one of the most sought-after home and business locations in the state of Maryland. The Greater Bowie Chamber of Commerce serves as the voice of business in our community. Our members provide you with electricity, transportation, education, health care, local news, banking and financial services, lawn care, and entertainment, almost anything you need to purchase you can purchase from a chamber member. Our chamber is committed to supporting our members and the communities we serve. In the past, we have hosted debates for local elections, sponsored educational contests for school children, sponsored trade shows, economic development forums, the annual State of the City address and after- hours mixers for business owners to get together and share ideas on an informal basis. We believe that a strong education system is crucial to the success of our community. Recently our chamber created a nonprofit entity, Friends of Bowie High, that raised money to refurbish the track and fields at Bowie High School. We raised almost $500,000, rebuilt the track on budget, and I am proud to state it is being used today by the students as well as many citizens of our city. Through our partnership with the city of Bowie and Councilman Doug Peters we sponsor and administer “Youth Leadership Bowie.” The program encourages top high school students in the community to explore a variety of careers, while teaching them team-building and leadership skills they can use for the rest of their lives. Smart growth in the community is also crucial to our success. Having lived and raised children in our community for the last 15 years I have seen many changes. New shopping areas and more dining choices have made living here more convenient. However, it has also brought more traffic to the area and causes a strain on our public resources. Businesses provide significant tax dollars to provide those resources. I encourage you to shop with your local merchants, and relocate your business to the Bowie area if you are not already here. By working together, we can continue to enhance the great quality of life environment in the same community where we live, work, play and thrive. For information, call 301-262-0920. The writer is president of the Greater Bowie Chamber of Commerce. Learn more about Bowie!
