Takin' What They're Givin'

... 'cause I'm workin' for a livin'! (Huey Lewis and the News, I believe?)

Busy today. I came in early so I could sit in with the sports department of The Capital --- looks like I will be working here and there with them to lay out pages and maybe write some sidebar stories whenever they need som help. Not only am I happy to do it, but it is a step in the right direction for someone who thought he already had his dream job. Now I have more learning ahead of me.

Then it was off to Bowie High School where I attended the letter-signing ceremony for seniors Samantha Collins and Brian Graham. Both are soccer players at Bowie High. Collins will attend University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown and Graham is heading to ... [Hey! Ever have one of those brain freezes?] ... I misplaced that information. But I assure you it will be in this week's Blade-News, as well as a preview of the baseball season. Last year the Bulldogs won the regionals. The first win of the season for Bowie will be the 300th in the 30-plus-year coaching career of Bob Estes.

Also in this week's BBN you can find stories on BHS lacrosse player Katie McGinnis and Bowie native Michael Lonergan, who coached his Vermont Catamounts basketball team within one game of his first NCAA Div. I Tournament. The Catamounts will host Boston University in Burlington Saturday at noon. The game will be televised on ESPN2.

STAFF BLOG: LEFT FIELD

Left Field will address major sports news in Bowie, Mitchellville and Glenn Dale, as well as late-breaking information that occurs after the print edition of the Blade-News has passed its deadline. Left Field will also serve as an opportunity to take my print column, Out of Bounds, a step further.
